- Description: The artist's key themes, repeatedly explored, were the concept of memory and the collections of emotions. His favourite subjects included the interior, and scenes from everyday life. He aimed to take snapshots from a person‘s life and represent fleeting thought, movement or feeling in his painting. His work was in the vein of 'Intimism', a movement which included Matisse, Bonnard and Vuillard. His early work, of which Girl on a Sofa is one, suggests a sense of claustrophobia and unease, as if the artist desired to be elsewhere.
