Howard Hodgkin (1932 – 2017)

Biography: Howard Eliot Hodgkin CH CBE was born in London and studied at the Camberwell School of Art in 1949, followed by the Bath Academy of Art (1950 to 1954). After finishing his education he taught first at the Charterhouse School in Surrey then at the Bath Academy of Arts and the Chelsea School of Art. His first solo show was in London in 1962. He became one of Britain’s most popular painters. In 1984, Hodgkin represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, in 1985 he won the Turner Prize. In 2003 he was appointed by the Queen as a Companion of Honour. His painting style was instantly recognisable, and was always based on his own memories and experiences.
