The East Coast harbour in question is Arbroath where he taught in the Summer School at Hospitalfield House in the mid 1960s during his summer vacation from his lecturing post at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee.
The painting is based on a drawing from a sketchbook containing several similar drawings of the fishing port of Arbroath and with its harbour, fishermen's houses and the fish-smoking sheds that still produce the well-known Arbroath Smokie. - Dimensions: 71 cm (H) x 91 cm (W).
