The Divine Sky I
- Artist:
- Type: Photograph
- Production Date: 2020
- Description: The Divine Sky began with a series of abstract ink drawings, using a limited colour palette that became integral to the final work. Sekai‘s interest in the colour blue came from research into the indigo dye processes used in Mali ‘ there are twelve stages of the dye process, starting with ‘The Blue of Nothingness‘ and ending with the deep indigo of ‘The Divine Sky‘. Her research in turn led to the creation of this photo series, made in the early stages of the COVID-19 lockdown, where studio had to stand in for landscape.
The Divine Sky takes as its starting point a process of inscribing and re-inscribing thought through automatic drawing with ink on paper, indigo pigment on fabric and performance to camera which is then photographed and filmed. The artworks tell the complicated history of lived and ancestral experience and reclaim space both physical and psychic.
The Divine Sky I depicts a busy restless mind, The Divine Sky II; a calmer expression and The Divine Sky III represents the mind after meditation, breathing and in this case after drawing. A state change achieved through practice showcasing the healing potential of art, especially in conjunction with other modalities. - Digital Copy:A digital copy exists.
