Muses Series 5
- Artist:
- Type: Photograph
- Description: Catriona Munro, Muses Series (modelled by Aisling Gavin)
These images (seven in all) draw on photographs of poets Alice Meynell and Edith Sitwell which depict them in front of tapestries and painted backdrops. In these images, the woman poet blends with the artistic scene itself, suggesting that she herself is an art object.
A memorable portrait could make or break a woman poet‘s career. This dramatic image recalls portraits of modern celebrity poets such as Marianne Moore and Edith Sitwell who understood the cult of personality, deliberating cultivating a mysterious or eccentric aura. Here the creative woman looks beautiful but also slightly monstrous; her wild hair casts strange shadows on the wall behind her. A woman poet was expected to look extraordinary.
Catriona Munro studied Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 2009. She was chosen as one of the Royal Scottish Academy‘s New Contemporaries for her ‘Glasploitation‘ (Glaswegian exploitation) film Babes Beyond the Barras. Her last exhibited series of photographs, Incantations, was inspired by 1990‘s band photography, witchcraft and Gregg Araki. She lives in Glasgow - Dimensions: Framed: 83 cm (H) x 62 cm (W).
