Muses Series 1
- Artist:
- Type: Photograph
- Description: These images (seven in all) draw on photographs of poets Alice Meynell and Edith Sitwell which depict them in front of tapestries and painted backdrops. In these images, the woman poet blends with the artistic scene itself, suggesting that she herself is an art object. Here, however, the confrontational gaze of the subject reasserts a sense of individuality and power. Like Julia Margaret Cameron‘s Pomona, she stares back defiantly at the viewer.
