And in a letter from Norman McLaren to his parents (from London, 20 March 1938) he wrote:
‘The world political situation goes from bad to worse. It will end up with a long and terrible war infinitely worse than the last one and probably much longer. I was very pleased Hitler walked into Austria the way he did ‘ instead of having a war that might have turned Austria into a second Spain! You will see I have changed my tune since last I talked with you about such things ‘ I am no longer a communist but instead a Christian ‘ I fear a big modern war very much more that I fear Hitler or Fascism. I am only glad I didn‘t go out to Spain again.‘
