First Snow, Upper Deeside

- Description: The artist says: This painting was painted after a trip to Aberdeenshire in January. Having grown up in Aberdeenshire and witnessed many a severe winter, this kind of snow landscape has always had a huge effect on me. The way frost and snow change the colour, texture and look of a landscape has always inspired me. I had also just seen the wonderful retrospective of Joan Eardley at the RSA in December. She had been the first significant painter to have inspired me as I grew up, Aberdeen Art Gallery having a number of beautiful paintings by her. There were a couple of winter landscapes in that retrospective exhibition that profoundly moved me and undoubtedly influenced my work.
