- Description: This is one of a series of designs for a pack of Scottish Historical Playing Cards, designed in the mid 1970s. They were commissioned by the Stirling Gallery, owned by Angus Ogilvy, one of the University's first alumni. Each of the character cards in the pack is a figure significant to Scottish history.
Macbeth (ruled 1034-58) is the King of Spades in this set (the Queen is Lady Macbeth and the Jack is Malcolm Canmore).
'Shakespeare's sources got it wrong. Macbeth was rightful Thane of Moray and High King of Scotland. Duncan was the interloper. He did rule from Inverness, the castle with the "keen and nipping air", and his reign was outstandingly peaceful by local standards.'
