- Description: This is one of a series of designs for a pack of Scottish Historical Playing Cards, designed in the mid 1970s. They were commissioned by the Stirling Gallery, owned by Angus Ogilvy, one of the University's first alumni. Each of the character cards in the pack is a figure significant to Scottish history.
Margaret is the Queen of Clubs in this set (the King is Alexander III and the Jack is Robert the Bruce).
Margaret, the Maid of Norway, (1283-90) was granddaughter and heir assumptive of King Alexander III of Scotland. She was Queen-designate of Scotland from 19 March 1286 to her death on 26 September 1290, en route to Scotland. The Jack of Clubs is Robert the Bruce who was grandson of one of the thirteen who had claimed the throne after the Maid of Norway's death. Bruce gained the respect of the nobles and was crowned King of Scotland in 1306.
'Called Dame Margarete Reyne de Ecosse - Queen in name but sadly dying in Orkney after a stormy autumn voyage from Norway - her death left the throne vacant.'
