Crossing the North Sea
- Artist:
- Type: Painting
- Medium: Oil on canvas
- Production Date: 1968
- Description: William MacTaggart was the grandson of the artist William McTaggart, best known for his paintings of the sea. As a result the younger MacTaggart initially restricted his subject matter to landscapes and still lifes. After his marriage to Fanny Aavatsmark, a Norwegian writer and art critic, however, increased trips across the North Sea coincided with a marked new phase of fluidity in his work. From 1940 it has been noted that the artist began to layer paint more thickly onto the surface of his works, such as can be seen in this work in which the paint has been laid on with a palette knife. MacTaggart's later still lifes, landscapes and seascapes have rich glowing colours set against dark backgrounds.
This work would not have been painted outdoors or from life, which the artist had not done since1955. - Dimensions: Framed: 98cm (H) x 124cm (W)
