Cobalt and Indigo in Ultramarine
- Artist:
- Type: Painting
- Medium: Oil on canvas
- Production Date: 1967
- Description: Shape and colour are perhaps the two defining components of Heron‘s artworks. Of his work he said, ‘There is no shape that is not conveyed to you by colour, and there is no colour that can present itself to you without involving shape. If there is no shape then the colour would be right across your retina‘ (Michael McNay, ‘Patrick Heron, St Ives Artists‘ 2002 Tate Publishing). Despite the solid shapes and blocks of colour, his works retain a lightness due to the way in which the coloured forms float on and among each other. This painting, alongside another of his works, Cadmium and Light Red, was one of the first purchased for the Art Collection in 1967.
