He was an Edinburgh Councillor from 1974 - 1979. He was Labour MP for South Ayrshire (which became Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley ( 1979 - 2005). In 2005 he became Lord Foulkes of Cumnock and also served as an MSP between 2007 and 2011. He campaigned yes in both referendums and was responsible for establishing the Labour Campaign for a Scottish Assembly.
