- Administrative History: Dennis Canavan was born in Cowdenbeath. He worked as a teacher between 1968 and 1974 including a stint at St Modans High School, Stirling. He was briefly head of Stirling Council in 1974 before becoming Labour MP for West Stirlingshire (1974 1983) and then MP for Falkirk West (1983 1997). He then left the Labour Party and became an Independent MSP for Falkirk West (1999 2007).
