- Description: Lindsay Anderson directed his first film in 1948. Entitled Meet the Pioneers the film was a short documentary on the conveyor belts produced by Richard Sutcliffe Ltd, an engineering firm in Wakefield. The film also recorded the factory workers at work on the production line and relaxing at lunch. Anderson directed 3 more short films for Suttcliffe; Idlers That Work (1949), Three Installations (1952) and Trunk Conveyor (1952). In 1952 Anderson assisted in the production of The Pleasure Garden, a short film directed by the American art-house director James Broughton. Starring John Le Mesuier and Hattie Jacques the film presents a series of fantasy vignettes filmed in the dilapidated surroundings of the Crystal Palace Gardens. Anderson also appeared in the film. Unfortunately there is very little present in the collection relating to these early films. There is no production material for the Sutcliffe films and no contemporary correspondence. There is, however, a detailed handwritten account of the filming of The Pleasure Garden. Photographs for the Sutcliffe films and The Pleasure Garden are also present
