About the project
Our Billy Bremner Heritage Project
This project was led by Richard Haynes, Professor of Media Sport in the Division of Communications, Media and Culture in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Stirling. The project researcher was Dr Karen Fraser who worked with the community to co-produce the exhibition and heritage trail. The overarching purpose of the project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund is to use sport heritage to support community resilience and wellbeing through connecting people of different ages both within and across two communities in Stirling and Leeds. The project ran from January to October 2022.
The project researched, curated and connected people through a range of intergenerational and co-community heritage initiatives focused on remembering Bremner’s contribution to football. The activities included:
- Initiating intergenerational connections between young people with older people who knew Bremner from Raploch or Leeds.
- Using oral history, archive materials and inspirational quotes on Bremner to generate new intangible heritage, which would inspire creative outputs based on the memories captured by the communities.
- Co-creating a new community-led online exhibition to be hosted by the University of Stirling.
- Creating a digital heritage trail in Stirling linked to the online exhibition and connected to Bremner’s life story in the city.
