Jon Schueler (1916 – 1992)
View all Artists- Biography: Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jon Schueler was a journalist before enlisting in the US Airforce in 1941. The experience of extreme danger while navigating a B17 flying fortress, sitting in the clear plexiglas nose of the plane, surrounded by sky, was to have a powerful hold over him for the rest of his life. The Scottish Highlands too similarly fired his imagination. After the war, he studied art in San Francisco then in 1951 moved to New York where he established himself as one of the ‘second generation’ Abstract Expressionists. In the late fifties he fulfilled his dream to visit Scotland, staying in Mallaig for a winter and from 1970 onwards keeping a permanent base there and exhibiting successfully in Edinburgh and in the US.
