Humphrey Ocean (1951 – )

Biography: Humphrey Ocean RA (born Humphrey Anthony Erdeswick Butler-Bowdon) studied at Canterbury Art School (1970-73). From 1971 he was a bass player with the pub rock band Kilburn and the High Roads, which opened for The Who on its Christmas tour in 1973. He won the National Portrait Gallery’s Portrait prize in 1982, in 1983 he painted Paul McCartney’s portrait and the following year the poet Philip Larkin. He had his first major solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 1984 and has since shown at Tate Liverpool and Whitechapel Gallery, London. In 2012 he received an Honorary Doctorate from Canterbury Christ Church University and was appointed Royal Academy Professor of Perspective.
