Kirkland Main (1942 – 2020)
View all Artists- Biography: Kirkland Main (RSA, RSW) trained at Edinburgh College of Art (1960-65), becoming Head of School of Drawing and Painting there (1991-98) and a Professor at Heriot Watt University in 1998. This art work was purchased from the New 57 Gallery, Edinburgh in 1973. The gallery was created as part of a movement of grass-roots cultural initiatives developing in Edinburgh during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. It operated as a cooperative supporting contemporary art, run mainly by painters including Kirkland Main. It was eventually merged into what became the Fruitmarket Gallery in 1984.
