Fernand Léger (1881 – 1955)

Biography: Fernand Henri Léger was born in Normandy and lived in Paris in the first decade of the 20th Century, exhibiting alongside the leaders of the avant-garde developing a form of cubism of his own. He was a contemporary of Fergusson and Dunoyer de Segonzac.
During the 1920s he also made films, and in 1931 first visited the USA, where he lived during the Second World War. After the war his work gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art.
